Speed. Speed. Speed. Kelly held his national signing day press conference Wednesday afternoon and stressed the importance of Oregon filling needs, getting players who are athletes, and most importantly landing recruits with some serious speed. Oregon signed 23 recruits for the 2010 class, 20 from high school to join the three JC transfers already enrolled at Oregon. Out of those 23 recruits 10 players have been recorded with a forty time of 4.5 or faster. Oregon’s four-star recruits Lache Seastrunk and Dior Mathis come into the Oregon program reporting forties under 4.4 with Mathis at 4.37 and Seastrunk at 4.35. Josh Huff and Dior Mathis both come in just beind sporting 4.4 forty times. Going into Wednesday the Ducks had 20 commitments and landed three more on the first day recruits could send in their letters of intent to the Ducks. Huff (Houston, TX/Nimitz), safety Erick Dargan (Pittsburg, CA), and defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli (Salt Lake City, UT/Brighton) all pledged to the Ducks on signing day. Huff and Dargan were viewed as expected commitments while Heimuli was a surprise. However for Coach Chip Kelly all the signings were expected, including Heimuli. “We had a good feeling about Rickey (Heimuli) and Coach Azz (Azzinaro) had a great relationship with Rickey and his family,” stated Kelly. “Rickey handled the recruiting process the right way and went through all his checks and last night he called us with his choice and told us he would sleep on it and let us know again this morning.” Heimuli would sign with Oregon but for Coach Kelly and his staff they didn’t wait around a fax machine to see who came in and when. “I think we were the only college football program out there working and not hovering around the fax machine,” said Kelly. “We had a team meeting to talk about our off-season workouts and then went out and worked out with the team for conditioning. We didn’t sit around the office and fax machine.” Huff had been committed to TCU while also committing to Minnesota earlier in the year but was always on Oregon’s board and Huff always had an interest with the Ducks. Huff tripped out to Oregon back in the fall but shortly after his visit he committed to TCU. Then just a few weeks before signing day Huff’s name again appeared in the recruiting circles of a player the Ducks were going after very heavily. “Josh is a very talented player that does it all for his high school program,” explained Kelly. “He played quarterback, running back, receiver, defensive back, you name it. He was the key to his team in high school and we valued him just as much as our other backs we brought in.” Oregon signed 23 players for 2010 spread out over offense (9), defense (10), athletes (2), and special teams (2). The location of the recruiting class is also a big item to look at. Oregon signed 15 players within their normal west coast recruiting grounds but also signed three from Texas, two from Florida, and one from Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina. Three words can describe the 2010 football recruiting class and first of many for head coach Chip Kelly and the Oregon Ducks.
