Reid Webster of Etowah High School (GA) hadn’t heard much from the University of Miami until two weeks ago.
Miami is recruiting Webster as an offensive tackle. He also has offers from Oklahoma State, Oregon, Indiana, Ole Miss, and Air Force. Webster currently has no favorites. Two weeks ago, Miami defensive back coach Wesley McGriff extended an official offer to Webster after watching his film and seeing him at practice. “Coach McGriff saw my film on the internet and one day my coach told me to stop by his office because Miami was at the school. A couple of days later he came out to practice and they offered me.” “I was surprised when Miami came by because most of the schools at least sent me a letter before they came by the school. Miami just showed up and went ahead and offered. I was excited.” Webster (6-5, 270) says he recently talked with McGriff over the phone and he talked about his first impression of the coach. “Coach McGriff seemed like a pretty cool dude,” Webster told ESPN Affiliate InsideTheU.com. “He was telling me that I am the kind of player that they want down there and that I need to come down there this summer and check out the school and campus.” Webster says he isn’t very familiar with the Miami program at this point, but he would like to learn more on an unofficial visit this summer. “I don’t really know much about them right now,” Webster said. “I am looking forward to learning more about them. I have heard they have a small student-teacher ratio. That is interesting because I thought Miami was a really big school.” Webster and his family lived in Boca Raton for the first seven years of his life before they moved to Georgia. Webster says he didn’t grow up a fan of Georgia or Georgia Tech and that they wont consider offering until they see him at summer camp. “I have talked to Georgia and Georgia Tech,” Webster said. “Both of them want me to come to their camp before they offer.” Webster says he has no timetable on when he might make a commitment. He talked about the key factors that will go into his college decision. “I am looking for a good football team and somewhere I can get a good education,” Webster said. “I am going to go everything with my dad and mom and see what we think is the best place for me.” ESPN Evaluation: Webster is a genuine blue collar tough guy that loves to mix it up in the trenches. He has good size and mobility for a big guy. Even though lacks some agility and tends to be slightly stiff, really plays hard and is fun to watch. Fires off the ball low and hard and isn't afraid to lead with the mask. Displays excellent leg drive and tries to work the hands into the frame even if they start off a little wide. Demonstrates excellent effort and works to get crossfield in front of the ball carrier. Chips off to next level defender once loses control of first opponent or when double teaming. A very solid pass protector that anchors down and extends arms to keep pass rushers off his pads. Shuffles and maintains inside relationship on the defender; fights to keep rusher off the quarterback and can run a speed rusher deeper than the pocket. Webster should develop into a very good collegiate lineman. He has a lot of tools and works hard to be technique sound. He also has a winning attitude and will continually work to maximize his potential.
