Written by Tony Di Francisco The third and final preview of this weekend's Oregon NIKE Camp covers the class of 2011 and it is a VERY good one. Half of these prospects already have verbal offers but all of them are looking to be solid division one recruits.
QB Brett Smith, Salem, OR Smith is a 6’2, 180 pound dual-threat quarterback from West Salem HS in Salem, OR. He has a hand-timed 4.7 40 yard dash and has good mobility. Brett has no verbal offers thus far but is already being recruiting by the likes of Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Cal, UCLA, and Notre Dame. RB Ronnie Daniels, Albuquerque, NM Ronnie is definitely one to watch out for. He has two offers so far from both in-state New Mexico schools but is hearing from Oregon, LSU, Ohio State, Colorado, Texas Tech, Stanford, and Utah. As a freshman, Daniels was 1st tam all-district and all-state honorable mention. Daniels is a junior to be and is already 6-foot-0, 200 pounds so look for him to be recruited as a power running back by Oregon and all other candidates.
RB Bishop Sankey, Spokane, WA The Ohio native has had a lot of success rushing the ball thus far. His lone offer is from Washington State but is receiving interest from a ton of schools. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound stud running back is also a dangerous return man as well. He has shown good breakaway ability thus far averaging 10.8 yards per carry as a sophomore and also being timed at 4.4 in the 40 yard dash. Bishop has also made a name for himself in track as well. RB Deanthony Thomas, Los Angeles, CA The junior to be blue-chip Thomas, a 5’10”, 175 RB from the class of 2011 is also known as “Black Mamba.” In 2008, he was just the 2nd freshman in the history to make the 100 Meter Final at the California State Championship Track and Field Meet. As a sophomore this year, Thomas just won the 100 Meter race at the district finals in a time of 10.73. As of right now, he favors USC, UCLA, Oregon and Arizona State due to the success of both on the football field as well as the track. TE Colt Lyerla, Hillsboro, OR Colt impressed a ton of people at the Schuman's National Underclassmen Combine. Colt passed the eye-ball test at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds but also recorded a 38.5 inch vertical jump which at that size is extremely impressive. Lyerla also recorded a 40 time of 4.62, a shuttle of 4.20, a record-breaking 10”10 broad jump, and added 27 reps on the bench. Colt could project at a number of positions but it’s hard to think about what he could do as a tight end with his size and measurables. TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Gig Harbor, WA Austin has seen his recruitment soar recently and for good reason. He already has good D-1 size at 6’7.5, 250 lbs. Add athleticism to that size and you can see why he has been verbally offered by 10 schools so far- Arizona, Arizona State, California, Florida, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, and Boise State. He’s also receiving interest from schools like USC, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame. Look for Austin to be in consideration for the honors of top tight end of the 2011 class. OL/DL Kraig Akins, Springfield, OR Look out for Akins to be one of the top in-state prospects in the class of 2011. The Thurston prospect was 2nd team all-state on offensive line and 2nd team defensive line at the 5A level. The 6-foot-2, 165 pound linemen had 69 tackles and 17 sacks on the defensive side of the ball as a sophomore. OL/DL Andre Lee, Lake Oswego, OR Lee is the only non-senior on the first team All-State 6A offense last year for the Lake Oswego Lakers. He was actually the only sophomore period to receive any All-State votes which tells you a lot. He played as a sophomore at 6-foot-2, 245 pounds so will need to grow but will be a solid center/defensive tackle prospect. He has long arms, great leverage, and plays physical and strong. LB Tyson Coleman, Lake Oswego, OR I listed Coleman as a linebacker because I think he projects best at the position but Coleman is a versatile athlete who could player a number of positions at the next level. He will most likely end up as a power running back, linebacker, or safety. The 6-foot-2, 200 pound athlete has been verbally offered from Oregon, Oregon State and Washington so far and is hearing from some of the top programs in the nation.
DuckTerritory's staff will be at the Oregon NIKE Camp so expect a lot of coverage and breakdowns in the week following the camp.
